Classic tractors and cars shine at Cruise-In

Dozens of farm and road vehicles were on display during the 12th Annual Classic Tractor Show & Car Cruisin’ on May 12 at Edison High School.

The school FFA organization hosted the event, which raises scholarship funds for members and also benefits charity. This year, the group generated funds for Amazing Grace Pillowcase, a Bloomingdale-based ministry which provides specially made pillowcases for sick children, the homeless and nursing home residents. A concession stand, Chinese auction, 50-50 raffle and silent auction were also held to benefit the FFA’s scholarship program, which awards two or three scholarships each year to graduating FFA members.

Spectators had a chance to view vintage Mustangs and other vehicles plus popular farm equipment from International Harvester to John Deere, while the Richmond Volunteer Fire Department also had a fire truck on exhibit. The show is a community service event for the organization’s 128 members in grades 9-12 and enables them to use their leadership, planning and organizational skills to raise funds for a good cause. Edison FFA Boosters were also on hand to supply and set up tents, man the chuck wagon and provide general support for the festivities. Other groups included the Massey Harris Ferguson Club of Ohio, which raffled off a tractor to a lucky recipient, and St. Gertrude’s Cat Initiative to help find felines homes.

Advisor Chuck Cline said the event has generated roughly $2,500 and has been a draw for the community.

“It is a good one-day fundraiser for charity and scholarships,” he added. “The kids get together as a committee and take all of the responsibility and put it all together. We teach them how to organize and work on developing and running the events.”

Kyle Koehnlein, a member of the tractor show committee, said it was the largest exhibit of vehicles the organization has had, with more than 30 tractors and 16 cars and motorcycles. He added that a charity is selected each year for the group to help.

“[FFA member] Lindsey Breon had told me about this charity and it seemed like a great organization,” he said.
