District Overview

   The Edison Local School District is located in the northern half of Jefferson County, approximately 12 miles from Steubenville, Ohio. Edison Local School District is comprised of the following communities: (1) Irondale; (2) Stratton; (3) Empire; (4) Richmond; (5) Amsterdam; and (6) Bergholz. The Edison Local School District is 204 square miles.

   The district has an enrollment of approximately 2,200 students. There are two elementary buildings (Prek-6) and one Jr/Sr. high school (7-12). Approximately 132 licensed and 85 classified personnel, 12 administrators, and 7 administrative secretaries are employed in the district.

   In 2009, the Edison Local School District was officially released from "Fiscal Watch", according to the State Auditor’s Office. We will continue to provide a high quality education with limited resources.

Mission Statement

The mission expresses the purpose of our learning organization.

   Everyone committed to the Edison Local School District will engage our children in the Ohio Content Standards. We will monitor our achievement with ongoing, authentic assessment and provide high quality intervention to enrich and remediate our children’s academic growth.

Vision Statement

The vision focuses on the future.

The Edison Local School District will become a district of excellence known for innovative teaching and high student achievement in a 21st century learning facility.


Belief statements express our values and character.

1. Every person has worth.

2. Every student can learn and is entitled to an education that meets his or her individual needs and personal goals.

3. Parents, schools, and the community must work together.

4. Schools must promote social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and moral development.

5. Honesty, integrity, and respect are essential for building trust with students, staff, and community members.

6. Students must acquire the necessary technological skills in order to compete in our global economy.

7. Schools must be safe, comfortable places where students can learn.

8. Education is a life-long process.


Parameters set boundaries within which we will make the decisions necessary to accomplish our mission.

1. We will communicate openly with students, parents, and community members.

2. We will make decisions based on the interest of our students.

3. We will subscribe to and support our Vision and Mission Statement.

4. We will have high expectations for student and teacher learning.

5. We will not tolerate behavior that is disruptive to the learning environment.

7. We will continue to provide proper maintenance of our facilities to ensure the safety of our children.

8. We will make responsible financial decisions.


Communication/Trust Goal

Strategy 1 - We will develop a community partnership in order to improve communication, understanding, commitment, and trust necessary to achieve the mission and goals of the district.

* Promote and sustain an open line of communications with the community

* Provide a program of increased community/parental involvement with our schools

* Update and distribute procedures for emergency or crisis situations

* Identify newsworthy events and programs, and prepare media campaigns to support or publicize them.

* Improve the quality of customer service in Edison Local Schools.

Student and Teacher Performance Goal

Strategy 2 - We will utilize research-based programs that support student and teacher learning.

* Align curriculum and instruction with the Ohio Academic Content Standards

* Provide all students with 21st century skills through enhanced curriculum and instruction which allows students to learn at their own pace.

* Increase OAT and OGT test scores each year by 5 percent.

* Utilize job-embedded professional development to improve student and teacher learning.

* Analyze value-added data to make pertinent instructional and curricular decisions at the classroom level. (Not a Teacher Evaluation Tool)

Finance Goal

Strategy 3 – We will develop and implement a spending plan to ensure the district is fiscally sound through efficient spending.

* Establish appropriate public/private partnerships for school funding.

* Find alternative ways to deliver educational programs to generate additional funding.

* Review annually the five-year forecast plan regarding the General Fund income and expenses to insure adequate financial resources for the district.

* Pass our Renewal Emergency Levy by 2010 in order to secure adequate funding for the district.

Facilities Goal

Strategy 4 - We will continue to maintain existing facilities and also work with the Ohio School Facilities Commission to secure a new building that will benefit all stakeholders in the district.

* Pass a Bond Issue to build a new state of the art building.

* Properly maintain existing facilities to ensure the safety of all students.

* Establish a schedule of preventative maintenance for structural, mechanical, electrical, and site.

* Follow all state and federal safety guidelines.
